Acatenango Overnight Itinerary

Traditional Hiking Experience
Day 1: Meet in Antigua at 8:00 a.m. and transfer to La Soledad, where you’ll begin the hike toward Acatenango around 10:30 a.m. The ascent takes approximately 6 hours, with a lunch break along the trail, before reaching base camp around 4:00 p.m. Spend the evening at camp with dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2: Start the early-morning hike to the summit at 4:30 a.m. and arrive around 5:30 a.m. to watch the sunrise, weather permitting. After returning to camp for breakfast, continue the descent and transfer back to Antigua, arriving around 12:00–1:00 p.m.

4x4 & Partial Hike Experience
Day 1: Depart from Antigua at 11:00 a.m. and travel to La Soledad before continuing up Acatenango by 4x4. Around 1:30 p.m., reach El Tonel, where you’ll leave the vehicle and hike for approximately 40 minutes to base camp. Enjoy lunch, the afternoon at camp, dinner, and an overnight stay. Day 2: Begin the hike to the summit at 3:30 a.m. for sunrise, weather permitting. Return to base camp for breakfast before hiking back to El Tonel, where the 4x4 will be waiting for the return journey to Antigua, arriving around 11:00 a.m.

    While the tour includes 4x4 transportation for a significant portion of the hike, participants should be prepared for moderate physical activity. The short hike to the base camp and subsequent ascent to the volcano entrance may require a reasonable level of fitness and mobility.



  • What should I bring for the overnight camping experience?

    We recommend bringing weather-appropriate clothing, sturdy hiking shoes, personal toiletries, sunscreen, and a camera to capture the stunning views. Additionally, consider bringing a reusable water bottle, snacks, and any personal items you may need for an overnight stay.
