    Acatenango can be experienced in two different ways. The 4x4 option takes you most of the way up the volcano before a final hike, while the hiking option follows the complete ascent on foot. This allows you to select the alternative that best matches the level of physical challenge you want during your day.

  • 4x4 Mountain Access

    The 4x4 option takes you to approximately 80–90% of Acatenango’s elevation, reducing the amount of hiking required to reach the upper areas. The final section still involves a demanding hike of approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, making this a more accessible alternative without removing the physical element of the experience.

  • Views of Volcán de Fuego

    From the upper areas of Acatenango, you may have views toward Volcán de Fuego. Because this is a nature-based experience, visibility depends on weather and local conditions. When skies are clear, the volcanic landscape provides an important part of the experience at the summit.

  • Private Transportation

    Both options include private transportation from Antigua Guatemala, making the experience convenient from the beginning of the day. The 4x4 option also includes transportation on the volcano’s access route, while the hiking option begins its ascent on foot.

Acatenango One Day Itinerary

4x4 One Day Experience
11:00 a.m. — Departure from Antigua Guatemala. Travel by 4x4 to approximately 80–90% of Acatenango’s elevation, followed by a hike of approximately 1.5 hours to the summit. Enjoy panoramic views of the volcanic landscape and Volcán de Fuego, weather permitting. Lunch is included before descending and returning to Antigua Guatemala.
Duration: Approximately 8 hours.

Hiking One Day Experience
9:00 a.m. — Departure from Antigua Guatemala. Begin the full ascent on foot through changing landscapes and ecosystems, reaching the summit after approximately 6–8 hours. Enjoy views of the volcanic landscape and Volcán de Fuego, weather permitting. Lunch is included, followed by a 3–4-hour descent and return to Antigua Guatemala.
Duration: Approximately 14 hours.

Acatenango One Day FAQ’s

  • What should I bring?

    A waterproof jacket, long pants, thermal clothing, climbing shoes or sneakers, a hat, cap or scarf, sunglasses, a small backpack, and water are recommended.

  • What happens if the road becomes impassable?

    The ascent may be canceled if road conditions create a safety risk. In this case, no refund is provided, and the experience will be rescheduled for a future date according to the availability of the private property that authorizes access.

  • Will I be able to see Volcán de Fuego erupting from Acatenango?

    Please keep in mind that this is a nature-based activity, so views of Volcán de Fuego and its eruptions cannot be guaranteed, as they depend on weather and visibility conditions.
