First Time Visiting Tikal? Here’s Everything You Need to Know
August 6, 2026

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tikal was once one of the most powerful cities of the ancient Maya civilization. Today, it’s one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the world, surrounded by the protected rainforest of the Maya Biosphere Reserve.
As you explore its ancient plazas and towering temples, don’t be surprised if you spot monkeys, toucans, coatis, or even colorful parrots along the trails. Visiting Tikal is just as much about experiencing the jungle as it is about discovering Maya history.
There are two easy ways to reach Tikal from Guatemala City.
✈️ By Plane (Recommended)
The fastest and most convenient option is a one-hour domestic flight from Guatemala City to Flores, followed by a scenic 1.5-hour drive to Tikal National Park.
This is the perfect choice if you want to visit Tikal in a single day while making the most of your time.
🚌 By Bus
If you have a more flexible schedule, overnight buses connect Guatemala City with Flores in approximately 8–10 hours. From Flores, you’ll continue by road to Tikal National Park.
While this option takes longer, it’s a great alternative for travelers looking for a more budget-friendly adventure.
Walking through Tikal feels like stepping into another world.
Towering pyramids rise above the rainforest, ancient plazas tell stories of a remarkable civilization, and every trail offers the chance to encounter incredible wildlife.
Whether you’re passionate about history, photography, or simply searching for an unforgettable experience, Tikal is a destination that belongs on every traveler’s bucket list.
