Because the farm is fairly high in the mountains—8,694 feet (2650 m) above sea level—parts of the trail will pass through a high-elevation cloud forest, which is usually shrouded in mist. In addition to protecting an endangered environment, El Pilar also provides water to nearby communities and grows a small amount of coffee.

Owling El Pilar Itinerary

At 4:30 PM, your expert birding guide will meet you at your hotel in Antigua for a short drive to Finca El Pilar, a beautiful private reserve located just outside the city. You'll begin with a brief stop at the hummingbird feeders, where species like the Azure-crowned Hummingbird and White-eared Hummingbird are frequently seen.

As dusk approaches, you'll head up the mountain trails in search of nocturnal wildlife. The highlight of the evening is the Fulvous Owl, a rarely-seen and striking species native to the region’s cloud forests. With patience and the guidance of your local expert, you’ll walk the peaceful trails, listening for calls and watching for movement under the cover of night.

Around 8:30 PM, you'll return to Antigua and be transferred back to your hotel
